The British Human Power Club |
What's it all about, then? - The British
Human Power Club was formed to foster all aspects of human-powered
vehicles - air, land & water - for competitive, recreational
and utility activities, to stimulate innovation in design and
development in all spheres of HPV's, and to promote and to
advertise the use of HPV's in a wide range of activities.
In theory, anything and everything from a pair of
roller skates to a human-powered aircraft. However, the majority
of the Club's activities revolve around land vehicles, which are
usually, though not necessarily, recumbent bicycles or tricycles.
We run an annual race series
for non-UCI-approved machines, usually some eight-ten events.
Every six (at present) years, we also host the annual European
Championships. If you're not competitively inclined, the race
meetings are still good places to meet and socialise with fellow
enthusiasts, and to try out people's strange machines.
In addition to the race series, we also organise one or more touring weekends in divers interesting parts of the country, and depending on the location of the European Championships, some brave souls will ride to these as well. You don't have to have a funny bicycle to join in, but you might feel a bit odd if you take part on an upright...
Plus, there's the BHPC's publications: "So You Want To Build An HPV" - a 52 page treatise on how to, and how not to, set about the construction of your own machine - and the quarterly "BHPC Newsletter", to keep one abreast of what's happening in the Club and the big wide world of Human-Powered transportation
Want to join the cutting edge of cycling? You are
welcome to come along to the meetings (listed). You will have the
chance to see the machines in action, chat with their riders and
designers and may even get a chance to ride. Alternately, get in
touch and join.
Lie down and be counted!
